I'm thinking about doing a challenge where I read a book that is based in all of the different states, such as a book based in West Virginia or North Carolina. That being said I don't expect to get this done really fast. I do believe it will be something that I will work on for awhile because I do want the books to be relatively interesting to me. I don't plan on any of them being nonfiction or any type of biography just because I haven't actually found any type of biographical work to be interesting. I read for fun and I'm more interested in fictional works. However, I do love crime inspired nonfiction I loved it while in college, and I actually have a B.S. in Criminal Justice because I loved learning this type of world. But I feel like if I picked up a book that was nonfiction it'd be way to easy to do this challenge because all I would have to do is find a history book about that state and even though I love history and I think this idea would be really interesting I don't think that is how I want this challenge to go. Actually I think that would be a very interesting route to pursue too, one day.
I think it would be fun to go out and find books that are based in areas that are kind of hard to find. In all my life I've only found one work of fiction that was a story based in West Virginia. Most books I've read are genuinely based in the bigger cities or more well known states like New York, North Carolina, California, Texas, and Florida, the more touristy areas. But that one series I found that was based in West Virginia was actually really interesting, it was the Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. I bought the first book because I think it was actually free or only $0.99 and I had the book for a long time before I actually started reading it. I actually had no clue what this book was about, I only knew it was cheap and based in the state I grew up in. It was a eBook, I actually had it on my Nook. It has been a really long time since I read this book. But I remember the second I read the first book I was addicted I quickly read through the whole series, and back then I was just a kid and I'd have to beg my parents to even let me buy these books or wait until a holiday. My whole point is that even though I had no clue what this book was about I still bought it just because it was based in the place I grew up and it was and still is very rare to find something based in West Virginia that isn't historical or related to West Virginia folklore like mothman. Mothman was so far away from where I grew up that I actually didn't even see the statue until I was in college. But imagine all of the really good books that are actually hidden gems because they don't have that backing or following or maybe they are just new. I'm genuinely curious to read these books and I feel like I have a lot of books in my TBR that would probably make this challenge successful.
I plan on starting this soon. I've been thinking about doing it for a few weeks now. I feel like it would help me branch out some and learn about different states that I never actually been to before, however, I have traveled a lot growing up but I never really went west it was always north or south. I know that these books are fiction and that the depiction of these states might be off, but I'm not really sure how I'm going to count the books yet, such as basing the books off by the location of the setting or by the author. I'm leaning more towards the setting because I want to read about the story. So I think that is the route I am going to go. The more I am thinking about it I think it would be really cool to read a fictional book and then read a historical book about the same area and then do a compare and contrast maybe. We will just have to see how this idea develops and see what it ends up being like. I think I might start this now despite the year being almost over just because I really want to do this and I've been thinking about doing it for a little while now.
