2018 Wrap Up

I think this is going to be one of the short and sweet posts. It's going to be the average wrapping up the year posts. Definitely going to talk about the number of books I've read year, did I meet my Book Goal of the year, my average rating of the books I've read, and what my goals for reading and the blog overall for the following year!

So according to Goodreads, I read a total of 13,416 pages over a 40 book span. My longest book was Whiskey Beach by Nora Roberts, which actually made the top ten of the year, such an incredible book. My Goodreads goal was only 25 books this year so I definitely met my goal. I started giving myself a more reachable goal because in recent years I've been reading fewer books because of work and school. This is the first year off from school and my life has really been in limbo in regards to my job. My average rating is 4.5 stars, which is pretty good. But I definitely want to start being more critical of my reading. I know I haven't been really the greatest at reviewing my books that I've read.

My main goal for the new year is working through my TBR pile. It is insanely huge! I think over the past couple of years the bouncing around made the books just grow so much. I really enjoyed regrowing my book pile but now I'm starting to get really aggravated! I literally have books stashed all throughout my house and the majority of these piles are unread books! The fact that they are unread is what aggravates me the most. Plus I still keep buying books whenever I can. So for this year, my goal is to not buy as many books and start really getting through this crazy pile of books. I think my book hauls will only be new releases of books that I really have to have like An Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekannen, which I have been wanting since hearing about this book and I plan on getting it when it comes out in a couple of weeks.

I also really want to build my own bookshelf and start getting my library put together. I'm super weird I love to have an organization when it comes to my books but I want them to be placed in something funky instead of the normal, standard bookshelf. So far I've built a crate bookshelf which is super cute, I really want to make another one to go on the other side of my TV. The huge bookshelf project I want to do is involves two old doors that I want to rehab and then make a double door bookshelf! This is on hold until I find the doors and have the money to do it. I'm also thinking about making some hanging bookshelves. I think I should have all of my books out of the closet, off the floor, and just piled everywhere.

As for the blog I'm thinking of keeping it. I want to continue reading the books and reviewing them like I have been doing. I want to really start expanding it, which I started doing kind of with posts like the book hauls and the top ten of the year. I have kind of been playing with the idea of comparing the book and movie adaptations because I think that will be a really good project. I've really been trying to think of more content in order to still have something to post about that isn't the same thing over and over.

ShayKay's Review of Innocent in Death by JD Robb

Innocent In Death (In Death, #24)

Synopsis From Inside of the Book

Eve Dallas doesn't like to see innocent people murdered. And the death of history teacher Craig Foster is clearly a murder. The lunch that his wife lovingly packed was tainted with deadly ricin. And Mr. Foster's colleagues, shocked as they may be, have some shocking secrets of their own. It's Eve's job to get a feel for all the potential suspects - and find out why someone would have done this to a man who seemed so offensive, so pleasant.......so innocent.

Someone Eve could easily picture dead is an old flame of her billionaire husband, Roarke, who has turned up in New York and manipulated herself back to his life. Consumed by her jealousy - and Roarke's indifference to it - Eve finds it hard to focus on the Foster case. But when another man turns up dead, she'll have to keep in mind that both innocence and guilt can be facades.

Thoughts Before Reading

I'm insanely in love with this series! To most people who have never read these books, it can be really intimidating. There are over 40 books in this one series! It's amazing! plus every book is at least 300 pages if not longer. Then to top it off there are quite a few little short stories too. I will admit that I was a little intimidated by it because of how large of a series it is. I actually listened to the first book through Audible. The only thing I can say about that book is OHMIGOSH! It really started my entire addiction! I listened to a lot of the beginning of this series through Audible, and then I eventually swapped over to get some of the books in the physical copies. Then that addiction grew into getting the whole entire series in physical form because I LOVE this series. Like any other series, there are going to be some books that are completely amazing, some that are just okay, and then a few that's just whatever. I've never really found a story that was just completely awful! The last book, Born in Death, was just as good as the first book. Innocent in Death is the 24th book in the series. I've been reading this series for about a year almost. Unlike most people I can't read a series from beginning to end, even if it a really short series, I like to come back to the world. There are moments in this series that I definitely read it back to back to back.

Fun fact JD Robb is actually Nora Roberts, she writes this series under a different name. I have started branching out into Roberts's other books recently. I'm starting to find out that it is just her, and not just the In Death series, that I cannot get enough of. I love her writing style.

Well, let's just jump into this book! Like I mentioned don't let this series intimidate you because of the length! If you like mystery book or romance books or comedy books or drama books this is the series for you! You could always do what I do and just bounce through the series slowly. My only real regret is that I haven't been writing these for the whole entire series! It would be amazing to go back and read about how I felt and thought about each book in the series instead of the series overall.

I really cannot wait to find out what happens between Roarke and Eve! I love their relationship. Plus a jealous Eve is going to be hilarious, for those of you who have read these books you know how Eve processes emotions. These books are actually set in the future. Eve is a lieutenant and she actually meets Roarke in the first book. It's amazing thinking about how Eve has grown throughout this whole series. Then there is Peabody! It feels like she was just a baby when we first meet her! Don't even get me started on Mavis! I really love this world, the characters, and really just everything about it.

I'm so terribly sorry for all of the rambling! Plus this is already shaping up to be a long post. I will definitely try to keep the next sections short and sweet. I really want to try to leave spoilers out of this post because I really want everyone to be able to read this whole series and experience what these books are truly about and maybe even give you the encouragement you might need to pick up the first one in the series!

Middle of the Book Check-In

****SPOILERS****

I love Roarke and Eve's relationship. I really just wanted to get that out there before I say the rest of my check-in. Roarke killed me in this book so far! In every book up until this point, Roarke has always seemed to know Even better than she knows herself. He knows how insecure she really is underneath her whole show she puts on for the world, so for Roarke to go out with his 'Maggie' is really annoying me. But on the other hand, I really love seeing how Eve is handling this. Which is so far not the greatest. She kind of just keeps brushing it under the rug and letting it just hurt her instead of confronting him. But Roarke was always the one who started the conversation and Even always tries to just ignore the issue. Plus Eve will not talk to anyone about the issue or how she feels, she just keeps it all bottled up. This whole craziness has me on the edge of my seat. It really is a cannot out down book so far. Definitely a 5 out of 5 at the moment.

Overall Thoughts of the Book

****SPOILERS****

This was most definitely one of the better books in the series. It was so INTENSE! First off the conclusion to the whole Maggie situation! Eve finally came to terms with how she felt with the whole thing and thanks to Mavis she figured out that Maggie was playing them. At first, Roarke didn't want to accept it but he finally opened his eyes to it all and put Maggie in her place. I loved how Eve hit them both in the face, it was just Eve being Eve. I loved how this story all played out. Then the mystery itself! It was so insane! The series really touches on all forms of crime and we finally got a murder that was done by a sociopath, and not just that but also by a kid. There was really no other word than completely insane and overall addictive! I think this really became one of my top favorite books in the series. I think I'm incredibly happy with how I finished the year out with this book.

End of the Year Role Call

Since all of the book community, and really the whole world, is doing their list of top ten things I've decided that I'm going to do my own list of the top ten books that I've read this year. My goal for this post is to tell you why these 10 books were my favorite, what I rated them on Goodreads, and also what the book's average rating on Goodreads is. By the way, the list is going to go from 10 all the way to my number 1 favorite read.

This list was kind of hard because I really couldn't decide on some of the books and then the placing of the books was pretty rough too. But I think overall I'm pretty proud of how it turned out.

So let's get this ball rolling!

10. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

16068905

Genre: Young Adult/Contemporary

Why is the book on this list?

I was skeptical about this book going into it. I didn't know if I would like the author, the store, or basically anything about this book! Let's just say I'm skeptical about any book that is written by an author I've never read about. Fangirl is actually one of the books that I've actually heard so much hype about that led me to read it. Normally I just go with my own opinions, but I'm really trying to reach out more. Like I've mentioned in my review of the book I found an adorable copy of the book and I just had to have it. I ended up really loving the book I loved the story, I really related to it. Rowell does a fantastic job. There were some really annoying parts, mostly the parts that cut over into Cath's fanfiction. I will admit that towards the end of the book I just barely skimmed these moments. But I loved watching how Cath had to really learn how to be her own person without having her built-in best friend, aka her twin sister.

Goodreads Rating VS My Rating

Fangirl

by
Rainbow Rowell (Goodreads Author)
 4.09  ·   Rating details ·  456,287 ratings  ·  44,218 reviews

I had 4 out of 5 stars, so it looks like me and the Goodreads community, for the most part, agrees on this rating. The book had a bunch of annoying moments like I listed above about the excerpts from Cath's fangirl fiction, which is the point of the book. I really like the story and the fact that she wrote the fanfiction, however, I just found it annoying reading the excerpts. There were a lot of pluses and negatives with this book.

My goal is to not have any spoilers so for more on the rambling thoughts of this girl about this book there is a blog post about Fangirl.

9. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

16034235

Genre: Young Adult/Fantasy

Why is the book on the list?

This was definitely one of the books that I really had a lot of issues with because I really didn't know where the book should be listed at. I really liked this book and it was really surprised by how much I enjoyed the book. But then I decided it had more negatives than some of the others higher on the list. I really loved the story overall, I loved the main characters, and it really gave me the Selection series vibes. But I think this book tried to fit in so many different things that it got a little bit confusing! If you could take out the ghosts I think it would make more sense. But I'm told I really need to continue on with the series to really find out the way the whole story fits together. Definitely, something I really want to continue on with.

Goodreads Rating VS My Rating

Throne of Glass

(Throne of Glass #1)

by
Sarah J. Maas (Goodreads Author)
 4.22  ·   Rating details ·  436,465 ratings  ·  35,263 reviews

I gave this book a 5 out of 5 stars, but looking back now I think the book really deserved 4 out of 5 stars. Mostly because of the confusing parts, even though there were only a few that were really confusing. I absolutely loved the characters and hated the villains. This book I feel like had so much hate or love that I really just wanted to have my own opinions on. I really loved how the book came out overall.

8. Whiskey Beach by Nora Roberts

16158519

Genre: Adult Romance

Why the book made the list?
This was the first Roberts book that I've read that wasn't apart of her In Death series. I absolutely loved it! I learned that I love her writing in general. I could not have loved Abra more! Then the mystery that revolved around Eli's ex-wife! It was most definitely a cannot stop listening to the audiobook, which definitely made this book one of the top 10 books of the year.

The Ratings: I gave the book a 5 out of 5 stars like I mentioned I absolutely loved this book, the characters, and just everything about this book! Goodreads, on the other hand, gave this book a 3.99 rating! Pretty disappointing, not bad but still not great. It seems like most people didn't like it because it was predictable, slow, and overall boring. I guess I haven't read enough of Roberts books to feel like that.

7. Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan

18158562

Genre: Adult/Contemporary

Why is the book on the list?
This is one of those series that I was completely obsessed with over the summer and it is all because of this book right here. It was definitely a laugh out loud book. I literally just watched the movie version of the book and even though it had its funny moments it doesn't stand close to this book. Now it definitely isn't any kind of mystery book and it does have a lot of romance, I mean the whole point of the book is about Nick and Rachel going to Singapore to meet his family so obviously the romance is centered around this couple. I think it was the perfect thing to read over the summer and help get over my reading slump that I had going on at the time.

The Ratings: I gave this book a 5 out of 5 stars because obviously, I loved the book. But thinking back now I think the book really deserves maybe a 4 or 4.5 out of 5 stars. The book was amazing and funny but was it one of the greatest books I've read not really. Will I ever reread it? Definitely so. This was probably my favorite one out of this series though. I'm still wishing for a fourth book in the series! The Goodreads nation gave the book a 3.82. I can totally see it though.

6. The Book of Essie by Meghan MacLean Weir

34503571

Genre: Adult/Contemporary

Why the book made the list?
This was one of the books that I got through Book of the Month and it was something that I definitely went out on the limb with. If I saw this book in a bookstore I honestly would not have picked it up. Mostly because the cover wouldn't attract me to it and because of that I would never have read the book cover to even see what the story is about. Essie's story is insane! I could not read this book fast enough! I was hooked from the very beginning and I think part was because it is different from anything I've never read before. I cannot express how glad I was to read this book. I know it is technically a contemporary book according to Goodreads, but it was so suspenseful and kind of had a little bit of mystery to it.

The Ratings: Since I couldn't put this book down obviously I gave the book a 5 out of 5 stars. The Goodreads nation rated this book a 3.98! Which rounded up makes a 4 out of 5 stars. 😂😂 A lot of people said that the subject matter was intense, which I totally understand. In this book a lone there was sexual assault, abuse, teen pregnancy, and religion. I honestly loved the mystery behind it, but I'm not going into it since it would definitely give the book away. So if these things are triggers for you then I definitely wouldn't pick up the book.

5. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

32620332

Genre: Adult/Historical Fiction

Why the book is on the list?
I adored this book! It was so interesting and from the title you know there is going to be a lot of drama because this chick had seven husbands throughout her life time! The book definitely gives off some old Hollywood vibes, think Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn. The book jumps between two different times because the main character is telling a journalist her life story so it can be made into a book. This book was definitely not released in 2018, but it sort of got it's popularity this spring. So many people fell in love with this story and it really deserves it because it was an amazing story. Definitely not something you expect.

The Ratings: On Goodreads this book received a 4.26 out of 5. It seems that some people read this book just because of the hype and others really enjoyed it. It is one book that I could really understand. I gave the book a 5 out of 5 stars. It was a very interesting read and I loved it. There is starting to be a theme that all of these books on this list are books that I just couldn't read fast enough!

4. Far from the Tree by Robin Benway

33830437

Genre: Adult/Contemporary

Why the book made the list?
This book was something else. I actually read it recently and I have another review of it. I was really interested in this story! I loved the way the three stories pretty much intertwined with one another. The three stories are really just the three different main views that we see because the book follows the three siblings. I honestly really hope that there is another book that follows them, or at least little novellas because I'm so curious how these kids grew because you really watch them all transform throughout this whole book.

The Ratings: Naturally I gave the book a 5 out of 5 stars. The Goodreads nation gave the book a 4.31 out of 5.

3. Shelter in Place by Nora Roberts

36425796

Genre: Adult/Romance/Mystery

Why the book made the list?
This one was intense you guys! It starts off with this crazy intensity. The majority of the book you are following a few main characters as the try to figure out how to live after being apart of a mass shooting at a mall. Then there are some crazy twists and turns throughout this book that brings these characters back together. I just really loved the book as a whole. I cannot really explain how much this book was without giving away some key spoilers.

The Ratings: This book was definitely a 5 out of 5 for me. The Goodreads nation even gave it a 4.26 too, so it really came up strong with the book world as a whole also. But like any Roberts books there are lovers as well as haters.

2. Born in Death by JD Robb

102857

Genre: Adult/Mystery

Why this book made the list?
I absolutely had to have an In Death book somewhere on this list! It has became one of my all time favorite books! For those of you that do not know this is a mystery series written by Nora Roberts. It's based in the future and the books follow a lieutenant named Eve Dallas. I picked this one in the book because I think it was definitely one of the stronger ones that I've read so far. It was amazing. I think a lot of people are intimidated by this series because it is so long. So far there are 45 books and she is still writing them! This book is the 23 in the series. Like any series there are some books that cannot be put down and then there are some that are just hard to get through. But they all have a reason to be read. All I can say is that this series is most definitely worth it and you do not have to read the books back to back. I bounce back and forth to this series. I'm obsessed with all of the characters.

The Ratings: I ended up giving the book a 5 out 5 stars. The Goodread nation gave it a 4.35 out of 5 stars. So like I've mentioned it is one of the stronger books in the series.

1. The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen

The Wife Between Us

Genre: Adult/Thriller

Why the book is on the list?
So this is no surprise! I first listened to this book on Audible, and I mean I was listening to it in the car, at work, and even when I was just at the house. I was obsessed with this book! As soon as I was finished with this book I had to have a physical copy so I was lucky to get one through Books of the Month. After my crazy obsession with this book I started hearing about it everywhere! All of the sudden everyone was reading it, talking about it, and then having serious arguments over it. It was crazy! I think this is one of the first times I ever got to read the book before the hype took over it.

The Ratings: I of course gave the book a 5 out of 5 stars. The Goodreads Nation gave the book a 3.85. Like I said it became a pretty controversial book, which really surprised me. It was most definitely one of those books that you just to read to understand it.

ShayKay's Review of Hard Eight by Janet Evanovich

Hard Eight by Janet Evanovich

6425

Synopsis From Audible

Bounty hunter Stephanie Plum has a 7-year-old child Annie Soder and her mother, Evelyn, have disappeared. Evelyn's estranged husband, Steven, is not happy. He and Evelyn signed a child custody bond, and Steven wants the bond money to search for Annie. The money was secured by a mortgage on Evelyn's grandmother's house, and the True Blue Bonds' agency wants to take possession of it. Finding a kidnapped child is not Stephanie's thing. But Evelyn's grandmother lives next door to Stephanie's parents, and their not about to see a neighbor lose her house because I'd an abduction.

Stephanie follows Annie and Evelyn's trial - and finds a lot more than she bargained for. Steven is somehow linked with the very scary Eddie Abruzzi. Trenton cop and on-again, off-again fiance Joe Morelli, and Stephanie's mentor Ranger enter the scene and because Stephanie needs Ranger's expertise, she accepts his help - even though it means paying some past debts.

Stephanie, Ranger, Lula, and Evelyn's lawyer/laundromat manager set out to find Annie. The search becomes a race among Stephanie posse, The True Blue Bonds' agency, and Abruzzi's crew. And did we mention there's a killer rabbit on the loose?

Thoughts Before Reading

I've been wanting to get back into this series for a while now. I feel like I started this series around the same time that I started the In Death series by JD Robb and even though I really liked the first Stephanie Plum book I just stopped reading them and continued on with my Robb obsession. I did read about 8 books and I stopped on 9 in the series and I really liked 8 however I don't know if I remember it all so I've decided to give the book a second chance on Audible and see how it goes this time around.

Halfway Through The Book

****SPOILERS****

I can definitely hear parts of this book and I get deja vu because I've definitely read it before. But I'm so much more engaged with the book this time around. I can't stop laughing. And this is the book where Stephanie finally sleeps with Ranger. And he's like babe you needs go back to Morelli! This love triangle really leaves me laughing because they are so funny. Plum is definitely very problematic, she's already gone through 3 cars in this book, for those of you who do not know Stephanie isn't the greatest bounty hunter but she tries. I don't know who I want her to end up with. I find myself rooting for both men throughout the whole series. I really love the part where Ranger told Stephanie that Morelli is husband material and she needs to make up with him!

Thoughts After Reading

****SPOILERS****

Finally finished Hard Eight! It sounds like I've been on it a really long time but I literally just started it a couple of weeks ago. This time around I did choose to go with an audiobook, which I'm so glad that I did! I've always found the series funny, but I've had a hard time staying with this series. It is rather on the long side, I think the newest one is book 25.

Stephanie Plum is a hot mess! I love her because she is that hot mess. I loved how she finally got to explore more into the Ranger side of her love triangle. He definitely cares about her but doesn't show it in a normal way, instead it is definitely a protective way like installing her security system and letting her use his cars. Morelli was there but not there. I found it pretty funny that he kept trying to act all cool and aloof but the second he heard anything going on with Steph he made sure to be there and check on her. I agree with Ranger she needs to work out her whole situation with him, and deep down I think she agrees to because she even mentions how she is probably going to marry him one day! But knowing this realization I think really spooked Stephanie. I definitely want to continue on with series hopefully soon! But good news I already own the next book! So it should be fairly soon, I'm just juggling a bunch of different books! If you guys only saw how many books that I have to read, I cataloged them the other day and let's just say it's bad ya'll!

ShayKay's 2018 Christmas Book Haul

I didn't get as many books as I normally do this year, mostly because I didn't have the money to go out and buy my own like usual. In the beginning, I really thought I wasn't getting any other than the one book that I bought a few days before Christmas. However, my aunt came through and got me a few books! Plus I got another one today too! 😍

So let's dive right into this! :)

Beartown by Fredrik Backman

33413128

Synopsis (From the Book): A tiny community deep in the forest, Beartown hasn't been the best at anything in a long time. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, and in that ice rink, Kevin, Amat, Benji, and the rest of the town's junior ice hockey team are about to compete in the national semifinals and they actually have a shot at winning. All the hopes and dreams of this place now rest on the shoulders of a handful of teenage boys.

Under the heavy burden, the semifinal match becomes the catalyst for a violent act that will leave a young girl traumatized and a town in turmoil.

This is a story about a town and a game, but even more about loyalty, commitment, and the responsibilities friendship; the people we disappoint even though we love them; and the deciisons we make every day that come to define us. In this story of a small forest town, Fredrik Backman has found the entire world.

Why I Wanted the Book: I've never read a book by Backman before, but I've heard a ton of talk about A Man Called Ove. Even though I've never read it I'm still interested in that book but I feel more interested in this one. I've just really been drawn to these hard-hitting books! I'm so interested in this book and I've honestly not heard that much stuff about it, especially since it has been out since August 2017. I'm so excited to read this I'll hopefully get to in the next few weeks, probably after I finish Red Dawn.

I was lucky to find this book at Walmart, and it honestly wasn't that much I think about $13. But still, it says a lot that I bought a book brand new and at full retail price! I definitely really been wanting this book.

Scythe by Neal Shusterman

28954189

Synopsis (From the Book): A world with no hunger. No disease. No war. No misery. Humanity has conquered all those things, and has even conquered death. Now scythes are the only ones who can end life and they are commanded to do so, in order to keep the size of the population under control.

Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe, a role that neither wants. These teens must master the "art" of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own. They learn living in a perfect world comes only with a heavy price.

Why I Wanted the Book: I honestly think this is one of those books that so many people have opinions on. I've heard people who really love the book and I've heard people who just couldn't even finish the book. But both sides agree this is a slow paced book. Which I honestly don't have a preference, it just really depends on my mood that day. The concept of the book sounds amazing! Plus I really just want to be able to have my own opinion about it, and the only way to do that is to read the book myself!

Mary Rose by Geoffrey Girard

38611830

Synopsis (From the Book): Mary Rose Moreland and Simon Blake are the perfect couple: successful young professionals in Philadelphia, attractive, madly in love, and ready to start a life together. When they travel to England for Simon to ask her parents' permission t marry Mary Rose, he learns an unsettling secret: Mary Rose disappeared when she was a little girl while the family was vacationing on a remote Scottish island. She reappeared mysteriously thirty-three days later in the same exact spot without a scratch on her and no memory of what had happened.

After Simon hears about this disturbing episode in Mary Rose's childhood,  he becomes obsessed with finding out what happened. He proceeds to launch his own investigation and arranges during their honeymoon for them to visit the island where she disappeared. But as Mary Rose's behavior gets stranger after their engagement, the need for Simon to unlock the truth about her past grows even more urgent. What he uncovers is beyond his most terrifying fears.

Ideas about the Book: I think this book is going to be very suspenseful, and I've honestly started getting really hooked in the whole thriller/suspense category, which is honestly one of the things I want to work on in the new year. I cannot wait to read it. I really hope I enjoy it just as much as I've enjoyed The Wife Between Us!

Only For You by Beth Kery

20893348

Synopsis (From the Book): Former army intelligence officer Seth Hightower may work with the Hollywood elite as a special effects makeup artist, but he's learned the hard way to keep fame-obsessed starlets at arm's length. Only one woman ever tempted him to break his rules about dating actresses, and she left him with the memory of one night of uninhibited passion and a lifetime of what-ifs.

Hollywood "It" girl Gia Harris is used to being in the spotlight and avoiding it when necessary. After she witnesses a heinous crime, she knows testifying is the right thing to do, even if it is in the midst of a media circus. But when things heat up and Gia is in danger, she needs to avoid prying eyes and the long arm of the media. Seth's special skills and knowledge of disguise make him the perfect person to keep her famous face out of the news, but their history makes him the last person she wants to be alone with. He's far too tempting, and now far too close...

As Seth conceals Gia and steals her away from a rabid public, they can't ignore the blistering attraction between them. And when they give in to their cravings, they reveal more about themselves than either of them has ever laid bare before...

Thoughts About the Book: I think it sounds pretty interesting. I cannot wait to read it. I really loved the books that I've read by Meredith Wild, and I hope this is something similar to the way she writes. I love getting books at Christmas because they are always from authors I've never read before so they literally pull me out of my comfort zone!

Winter Stroll by Elin Hilderbrand

24819476

Synopsis (From the Book): Another Christmas on Nantucket finds Winter Street Inn owner Kelley Quinn reflecting on the past year as he writes a holiday letter to friends and family. Though the year has had its share of misfortune and worry, the Quinns have much to celebrate. With jealousy, passion, and eggnog consumption at an all-time high, it's going to tka e awhole lot more than a Crhsitmas miracle to get the Quinns-and the inn-through the holidays intact.

Thoughts Before Reading: I love Elin Hilderbrand's writing style. I've only ever read one book by her and it was a close tie to making top 10 of the year for me. This is part of a series so I do have to read the first book first, but it sounds really intriguing. I cannot wait to get into this series. '

Thoughts about the Book: This definitely sounds like a YA book. I don't know how into I'll get, but hopefully, it is based in Hawaii and I can use this as my Hawaii book. I'm working on my around the state book challenge. I was going to wait until January to start it but literally every book I've been reading since I started it could be used in it so I just went ahead and started it.

ShayKay's Review of Far From the Tree by Robin Benway

Far from the Tree
Goodreads: Far From the Tree by Robin Benway

Synopsis from Goodreads

A contemporary novel about three adopted siblings who find each other at just the right moment. Being the middle child has its ups and downs. But for Grace, an only child who was adopted at birth, discovering that she is a middle child is a different ride altogether. After putting her own baby up for adoption, she goes looking for her biological family including -

Maya, her loudmouthed younger bio sister, who has a lot to say about their newfound family ties. Having grown up the snarky brunette in a house full of chipper redheads, she's quick to search for traces of herself among these not-quite-strangers. And when her adopted family's long-buried problems begin to explode to the surface, Maya can't help but wonder where exactly it is that she belongs.

And Joaquin, their stoic older bio brother, who has no interest in bonding over their shared biological mother. After seventeen years in the foster care system, he's learned that there are no heroes, and secrets and fears are best kept close to the vest, where they can't hurt anyone but him.

Thoughts Before Reading

I really cannot wait to jump into this read. I think it is going to be really interesting. I have no clue where else this book can go other than exploring these three siblings relationship. It is going to be an interesting spin, but very much reality. A lot of siblings do get torn apart from one another throughout the foster care system. I'm really curious about what Grace finds out about her biological mother throughout the book. Plus she is trying to come to terms of giving her own baby up for adoption and I think that also puts another spin on the story. How is Hope going to cope with giving her baby up? How do the siblings meet? Did they always know that the others existed? I wonder how the three siblings will get along with one another, just because you are related by blood these are still a group of strangers. So I'm really intrigued by this book and cannot wait to get into it. I will most definitely update as soon as I get to the middle as usual and we will see what direction the book is going in.

Halfway Through Check-In

*****SPOILERS FOLLOW*****

Okay, I'm kind of obsessed with this book. This is the first book I've ever read that had to deal with this kind of family dynamic, which is 100% actually happens in today's society. I'm really curious as to what Maya will say when she hears about Grace's baby? I mean will she understand why Grace gave her baby up, or will she just explode into a super long tirade about how she was completely wrong for doing it? I can understand why Maya and Joaquin really do not want to find their bio mom. Who would want to find a person that has acted like they didn't want a thing to do with you your whole entire life?! Most people don't even want to talk to someone who acts as they hate them, and then that same person is supposed to be a parent. I wonder Grace can ever get over giving her baby up or find her bio mom. I'm also really curious about Joaquin's backstory. So far I've been getting some tidbits of his past here and there but it is only touching on something bigger, I think. The only character that I've just been more annoyed with is Maya lately and it is mainly because she has the younger kid mentality. She is really obnoxious, but on the other hand, I really do like the whole huge circle of this story so far. Because you have one sibling that stayed in the system, one sibling that was adopted by parents who had the choice to get the older sibling and then also an opportunity to adopt the younger sibling as well, and then you have a sibling who was adopted and the parents had a bio kid right after adopting her. Maya's family dynamic is also getting really interesting because her parents are now talking about getting divorced, and now living separately. Maya can't really be defined as either liking or not liking her because I do like her story I'm just annoyed by her attitude. I really do enjoy all of the different views that are going on within this one family, and I really can't wait to finish this book. I really do not have any complaints about the story so far. I really love the character development, the story, and the purpose of the book so far. The first half is definitely a 5 out of 5 stars! :)

Final Thoughts

This book! It definitely made me do some ugly crying! I loved the story. I think it was written so well, the characters were amazing, and I loved the story. This book also had the perfect ending! I really wish there was a sequel to it because there are some things that I would love to see! For example, I would love to see how Joaquin's life plays out! Does he find his family?! Does he end up with Birdie?! Then what happens with Grace? I would even love spin-off stories instead of one that is all about these three. I did end up loving Maya, even though she made it really hard! I missed her and Claire. However, I do feel as though she needed this time apart to really grow into herself. She ended up being okay, but in the middle, she was CRAZY annoying! I definitely want to read more by Benway in the future, she is an amazing writer! I really can't express how much I truly enjoyed this book. It's been a while since I really felt like I was reading something that was completely intriguing to me.

ShayKay's Review of Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Fangirl

I wanted to add the Books-a-Million link because I'm obsessed with this edition! I've always loved books with the end of the pages colored! I think it helps to add a little bling to the book. This one also has some art on the cover, which is really cute. Even though I love these editions of the books I never really had one other than my leather editions from Barnes & Noble. Most of the time these books are the second or third edition of the book or an anniversary book. Plus these editions never really go on sale either. So I either already have the book or I don't want to spend a ton of money on one book when I can get a couple different books.

Synopsis from the Book

Cath is a Simon Snow fan. Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan, but for Cath, being a fan is her life - and she's really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it's what got them through their mother leaving. Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fanfiction, dressing up as characters for every movie premiere. Cath's sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can't let go. She doesn't want to. Now that they're going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn't want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She's got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend; a Fiction-Writing professor who thinks fanfiction is the end of the civilized world; a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words....and she can't stop worrying about her dad, who's loving and fragile and has never really been alone. For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?

Thoughts Before Reading

I think this book is going to be really interesting. I usually like these types of stories. I think it is going to be more or less about Cath growing up and being more confident in herself. It sounds like she hasn't really accepted the fact that her mother left and hasn't gotten over that pain yet. I think it is going to be really interesting to see how this all plays out. I think I'm really going to Cath, and really can't wait to jump into this story. I honestly feel like I can relate to Cath at least from the synopsis so I'm really, really hyped to just jump right into this book. I will make sure to update you all as soon as I get to the middle of the book just to see where the book is going and my thoughts on the material!

Halfway Through Check-In

*****SPOILERS BELOW*****

I haven't been so hooked into a book that I've literally stayed up 24/7, I've really stayed up until almost 5:00 a.m. this morning just plowing through this book. I think I can really relate to Cath, she reminds me a lot of myself. I think I would've reacted a lot like she did when she got to her dorm for the first time. I never stayed in a dorm so I can't say for certain that is how I would react. I'm to the point where I've learned about what is going on with her father. Plus her relationship with Wren is driving me nuts! On one hand, Wren has been by Cath's side their whole life, so I understand why she wants to take a step outside of her family's bubble in order to find who she is without being a twin. Then, on the other hand, she knows how Cath is so why force her into a world with absolutely no one there for her. I love that Reagan has really stepped up for Cath since being her roommate. It started off really rocky but now that Cath has her I think it is really good. She is also starting to get more confidence in herself. I feel as though Cath is learning how to depend on herself. In the beginning, I was rooting for Nick and Cath! He was helping her find more of herself as a writer outside of her fanfiction world. Then the way he ruined their friendship KILLED me! I feel like everything in Cath's world, the one that she really just started building for herself, just imploded within itself. It was really like the domino effect within Cath's life. I left off when she was really starting to get back on the right track. I'm really curious about what will happen with Professor Piper. I really have a love/hate relationship with the professor. On one hand, she is really putting Cath in her place with her fanfiction writing and trying to really force her to branch out. But on the other hand, she knew that Cath wrote half of Nick's end of the semester project. That really made me respect her again. I cannot wait to finish this book. I'm in love with this book and can't wait to find out what happens.

(12/06/2018)

Overall Review

Well, I finished Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. Overall I think I'm going to give the book a 4 out of 5 stars. Overall I loved the characters throughout the book. I did think the ending fell a little flat just because there were a lot of unanswered questions. But the rest of the book was outstanding! I absolutely adored Cath! I even ended up loving Wren! She just had so much going on that she came off as this awful twin, but when she ends up in the hospital I think everything really starts turning around for not just her but their entire family. Cath just had so much stuff going on throughout the book, however, I do think there were moments that she did make it worse for herself. I absolutely HATED Nick and I think that just continued on throughout the book. I'm just glad that he got what he deserved and I loved how Cath somewhat stood up for herself with that whole situation. I just wish the story continued on because I would love to know what would've happened with Professor Piper and Cath's actual paper she was supposed to write. Plus I really want to know what else goes on between Cath, Wren, and their mother. Then their father is another complete set of stories that I wish would continue on. And of course, I love Levi and Cath's relationship! I just love all of them and the book itself went on so well, but the last third of the book is where the story really fell a little short for me.

ShayKay's Review of Every Breath by Nicholas Sparks

Every Breath

Synopsis from Book Cover: Hope Anderson is at a crossroads. At thirty-six, she's been dating her boyfriend, an orthopedic surgeon, for six years. With no wedding plans in sight, and her father recently diagnosed with ALS, she decides to use a week at her family's cottage in Sunset Beach, North Carolina, to ready the house for sale and mull over some difficult decisions about her future. Tru Walls has never visited North Carolina but is summoned to Sunset Beach by a letter from a man claiming to be his father. A safari guide, born and raised in Zimbabwe, Tru hopes to unravel some of the mysteries surrounding his mother's early life and recapture memories lost with her death. When the two strangers cross paths, their connection is as electric as it is unfathomable...but in the immersive days that follow, their feelings for each other will give way to choices that put family duty against personal happiness in devastating ways. Illuminating life's heartbreaking regrets and enduring hope, Every Breath explores the many facets of love that lay claim to our deeper loyalties while asking the question, How long can a dream survive?

Thoughts Before the Book

I've been obsessed with Nicholas Sparks since forever. I think I have pretty much every single book he has wrote in some format, so of course I needed to read this book! Since Book of the Month had the very same book on the website for an add on book I had to do make sure that was in my box this month! So let's bring on the ugly cry baby tears that every Nicholas Sparks book does to everyone!

(11/20/2018)

Halfway Through the Book

*******SPOILERS BELOW********

I think I'm getting to the point where Nicholas Sparks books are getting a little repetitive. I really like his books, however, I know it is a 50/50 if I'm going to like it. I love just as many as I don't like it. So I'm really conflicted with this book so far. I kinda love it! I really do, but I feel like I'm getting ready to read the downside. Hope and Tru's connection is so interesting, but I'm curious how it will turn out between the two. Mainly because Tru has a kid in Zimbabwe and Hope explicitly said she doesn't want to leave the States. So who is going to give in order for them to stay together? Do they even stay together? Plus I'm getting ready to meet Tru's father and see what happens at the wedding. Both of these events make me feel like I'm standing on the edge of a cliff and getting ready to fall into a dark abyss. Mostly because I think Josh is going to show up just because it is something that happens a lot in Sparks books. But on the other hand he doesn't really act like he cares about Hope at all, like I think this break up is the final one and I really hope it is. Right now knowing what I've read so far my ideal ending would be Hope moving to Zimbabwe with Tru and living happily ever after. But I know this rug I'm standing on is about to be pulled right out from underneath me because this is a Nicholas Sparks book and my heart has not been shattered yet.

(12/02/2018)

Final Thoughts

Just like I promised I finished this book! I loved the concept of this story. Hope and Tru had a remarkable spin on a usual Sparks book. I kind of went on a little scavenger hunt learning more about the Kindred Spirit. For those of you who haven't read the book, and still for some reason reading this post regardless of the spoilers, the Kindred Spirit is a mailbox at Sunset Beach in North Carolina that people go and leave things in for others to read or see. Sparks got the idea for this book based off of a story that was in the Kindred Spirit. According to the book Sparks tracked down the couple that the story was written about. I really wanted to learn more about the mailbox since the book is actually more or less about the mailbox. The reason why I say that is because if it wasn't for the couple putting their story out there Sparks wouldn't have found it, the mailbox held a very special place for the couple, and then the mailbox brought the couple back together. Granted the mailbox is literally just a mailbox it can't go out into the world and make people do as it say. However, people use it as a platform to get their work out there, to speak about what is holding them down, and also just talk because they know they can say whatever they need to say and that there will be someone there to 'listen.' Everyone has the option to either sign their name or leave it anonymous. I think it is an awesome idea, very therapeutic. It is something that I would actually love to go and experience one day. I did tag the link above that will take you to an article about the Kindred Spirit and give you a little bit more information.

I had to jump into a little background in order to explain how I feel about this book. Like I mentioned during the middle of the book review I kind of had really conflicting emotions towards the book, but by the time I was halfway through the book it was really starting to pick up. The first third of the book is filling the reader in on who is Hope and Tru and what brings them to Sunset Beach. They are actually staying in the houses that neighbor one another. These two actually meet because of her dog pretty much. I felt bad for Hope because of what she was doing, but I loved Tru! He was undoubtedly the hero in the story. Not many people in his shoes would just tell Hope to do what she needs to do and he will accept that as well as wait on her, when it came to being with him or with Josh. I kept yelling at Hope through the book to pick Tru, because not only was he perfect but Josh was a jerk! Hope and Josh's relationship was awful and emotionally distressing mainly for her because it sounded like Josh was just out there living his life and he had Hope when he felt like it. Hope definitely had her faults. But overall I loved their story. It did break my heart when she basically said that Tru couldn't give her kids and that was the main reason why she just could not stay with him. I've never been the person that thinks having kids is a huge thing I would want to do. So if I was in her shoes I feel like I would pick Tru because I would've been fine with adopting or not having any kids at all. So it is interesting to see another's point of view in this situation. So I cannot say that I hate Hope, I just really did not like her in that scene in the book. Every other moment of the book I was rooting for her just as much as I was rooting for Tru. I wanted her to wake up and realize that she would be okay without Josh in her life. It was a very intense story and I hope whoever chooses to read it does so with an open mind and doesn't just give up one the book because it starts out pretty slow. Any Sparks fan should know that he does start his books out kind of on the slow side, but there is a reason for it. During those moments you get a lot of the character's information like their backstory and explains why they are doing whatever they are doing.

ShayKay's Review of Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1)

Synopsis from Amazon - After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin. Her Opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations. she'll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilarating. But she's bored  stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best. Then one of the other contestants turns up dead.... quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

Ideas Before Reading

I'm not a huge fantasy book lover. However, there are some exceptions to that. So after hearing about the reviews and looking into the book I'm really curious about this book. I tend to go into it with an open mind. It sounds really interesting with assassins aspect. Again it is an author I never read before so I'm hoping for the best. I also chose to get this book now because Amazon had the eBook for $2.99 and I figured why not try it, and here we are.

(11/14/2018)

*****SPOILERS BELOW*****

First Half of Throne of Glass

Before I go into what has been happening so far in the book let me just say WOW! I didn't think this book would really interest me as much as it did. I wanted to give this book a chance because it is so popular, the reviews are either they love it or hate it, and then there is the plain fact that I've never read a Maas book so I wasn't sure how I would feel about the writing style. That all being said I LOVE THIS BOOK! I'm completely obsessed with the characters and the book overall. When I've heard about these books before I heard a lot about Dorian but so far that is the only character that I've heard about and also read about so far. In most videos or comments about the book I haven't heard much about Chaol, Nehemia, or Celaena so it makes me wonder what happens with these three people throughout the story. I really love these four characters, it is amazing character development between everyone.
Even though I really love the story and everything going on right now in the book I am starting to get kind of confused. The story started is pretty much just about Celaena and her journey throughout the competition to be the King's Assassin. That story alone I felt like was really interesting because you had her being escorted everywhere, because who would want to leave an assassin alone to wonder throughout the castle! But the story is still predominantly about that but now the focus is starting to shift. Celaena just met the very first queen of Adarlan and she basically is telling her what she needs to do, but not really a why she needs to do it and there is a whole bunch of craziness going on with this meeting alone because this queen has been dead for centuries. So the story is getting really twisty and a little bit hard to follow. Even though it is a little bit difficult to follow I'm still enjoying the characters and pushing through the story because I'm really interested in seeing what all happens. It'll be interesting to see what happens with these characters. I can't wait to finish the story.

(11/27/2018)

Thoughts After the End

So I stayed up all night and finished this book last night. I was sucked into the chaos of Celaena's life while she was finishing the challenges. Let me just say this I never liked Kaltain! She was mean and it was all over a boy. This is one thing I absolutely hate is when a girl is being so manipulative because of a boy. So what if Dorian is a prince and a whole catch. I feel as though she really got what she deserved in the end of the book. Now Celaena broke my heart when she had to tell Dorian what's what because of her new position with the king. But I was still sad about the situation. But does that mean Chaol will finally grow something and go after her?! I can't wait to see what happens in the next book! I'm seriously hooked! I loved the way the story was developed and the characters. I just loved it overall. There were moments where I was seriously confused and annoyed with the book though. I think there was just so much just bunched together and it became tangled here and there but overall I still felt like it was still a really good book.

New Challenge?!?!

I'm thinking about doing a challenge where I read a book that is based in all of the different states, such as a book based in West Virginia or North Carolina. That being said I don't expect to get this done really fast. I do believe it will be something that I will work on for awhile because I do want the books to be relatively interesting to me. I don't plan on any of them being nonfiction or any type of biography just because I haven't actually found any type of biographical work to be interesting. I read for fun and I'm more interested in fictional works. However, I do love crime inspired nonfiction I loved it while in college, and I actually have a B.S. in Criminal Justice because I loved learning this type of world. But I feel like if I picked up a book that was nonfiction it'd be way to easy to do this challenge because all I would have to do is find a history book about that state and even though I love history and I think this idea would be really interesting I don't think that is how I want this challenge to go. Actually I think that would be a very interesting route to pursue too, one day.

I think it would be fun to go out and find books that are based in areas that are kind of hard to find. In all my life I've only found one work of fiction that was a story based in West Virginia. Most books I've read are genuinely based in the bigger cities or more well known states like New York, North Carolina, California, Texas, and Florida, the more touristy areas. But that one series I found that was based in West Virginia was actually really interesting, it was the Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. I bought the first book because I think it was actually free or only $0.99 and I had the book for a long time before I actually started reading it. I actually had no clue what this book was about, I only knew it was cheap and based in the state I grew up in. It was a eBook, I actually had it on my Nook. It has been a really long time since I read this book. But I remember the second I read the first book I was addicted I quickly read through the whole series, and back then I was just a kid and I'd have to beg my parents to even let me buy these books or wait until a holiday. My whole point is that even though I had no clue what this book was about I still bought it just because it was based in the place I grew up and it was and still is very rare to find something based in West Virginia that isn't historical or related to West Virginia folklore like mothman. Mothman was so far away from where I grew up that I actually didn't even see the statue until I was in college. But imagine all of the really good books that are actually hidden gems because they don't have that backing or following or maybe they are just new. I'm genuinely curious to read these books and I feel like I have a lot of books in my TBR that would probably make this challenge successful.

I plan on starting this soon. I've been thinking about doing it for a few weeks now. I feel like it would help me branch out some and learn about different states that I never actually been to before, however, I have traveled a lot growing up but I never really went west it was always north or south. I know that these books are fiction and that the depiction of these states might be off, but I'm not really sure how I'm going to count the books yet, such as basing the books off by the location of the setting or by the author. I'm leaning more towards the setting because I want to read about the story. So I think that is the route I am going to go. The more I am thinking about it I think it would be really cool to read a fictional book and then read a historical book about the same area and then do a compare and contrast maybe. We will just have to see how this idea develops and see what it ends up being like. I think I might start this now despite the year being almost over just because I really want to do this and I've been thinking about doing it for a little while now.

Quick Update

I promise I haven't just poofed again. I do mean to really keep up with my blog this time around. I actually have two posts in development right now. I decided that it was pretty confusing to update the actual post over and over so this time I plan on just posting the whole thing. However, I do intend to actually keep the dates so it will keep up more with me as I read the book. I'm definitely not in a reading rut I just have actually been a little busy so my books have been pushed to the back burner unfortunately.

I will do a little bit like a book haul because I might have bought some books today and yesterday. I mean it is Cyber Monday and Amazon isn't kidding around with their kindle book sale. I will most definitely tag as many of the sales to the book along with Goodreads link. But for the Books a Million books I'm going to tag the edition I got to one of the books because it is pretty cool but I can't really tag the other book to the website because I was able to get the book while it was on sale in the store, but I will have Goodreads links to all of the books below. So let's just go ahead and start with today's purchase and work my way back to last night.

Amazon Book Haul

33830437

So first up is Far from the Tree by Robin Benway. This book was on my TBR pile since hearing about it on BookTube. It sounds really interesting.

Synopsis (From Amazon): Being the middle child has its ups and downs. But for Grace, an only child who was adopted at birth, discovering that she is a middle child is a different ride altogether. After putting her own baby up for adoption, she goes looking for her biological family, including - Maya. her loudmouthed younger bio sister, who has a lot to say about their newfound family ties. After seventeen years in the foster care system, he's learned that there are no heroes, and secrets and fears are best kept in close to the vest, where they can't hurt anyone but him. Don't miss this moving novel that addresses such important topics as adoption, teen pregnancy, and foster care.

Like I mentioned earlier I have been interested in this book pretty much since I heard about it from one of the BookTube channels I follow. I would mention or tag their video but I have been obsessed with watching their videos, literally it's all I've been watching since probably Friday, and immediately add the books that interest me into my TBR pile on Goodreads. I also can't remember if it was one of their books they liked or didn't like. I have really been using their videos to learn about authors and books that I wouldn't actually buy on my own mainly because books are expensive and I like to keep with the authors I know I love versus branching out.

I'm pretty sure this is one of the books I found from Goodreads books of the year poll. I love how they let us vote on books and then they take a portion of the votes and then take it to the second round, and I believe there is another round before we actually get to the finalists. The synopsis of this story sounded really interesting to me, and as you can clearly see I really jump around different genres I typically like a little bit of everything. But saying that I don't normally like thrillers. I usually get bored with them because they are predictable. It wasn't until I read The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen that I really started giving thrillers the chance the really do deserve.

Synopsis (from Amazon): She went missing. He moved on. A whole world of secrets remained - until now. Finn and Layla are young, in love, and on vacation. They're driving along the highway when Finn decides to stop at a service station to use the restroom. He hops out of the car, locks the doors behind him, and goes inside. When he returns Layla is gone - never to be seen again. That is the story Finn told to the police. But it is not the whole story. Ten years later Finn is engaged to Layla's sister, Ellen. Their shared grief over what happened to Layla drew them close and now they intend to remain together. Still, there's something about Ellen that Finn has never fully understood. His heart wants to believe that she is the one for him....even though a sixth sense tells him not to trust her. Then, not long before he and Ellen are to be married, Finn gets a phone call. Someone from his past has seen Layla - hiding in plain sight. There are other odd occurrences: Long-lost items from Layla's past that keep turning up around Finn and Ellen's house. Emails from strangers who seem to know too much. Secret messages, clues, warnings. If Layla is alive - and on Finn's trail - what does she want? And how much does she know?

I think this book is going to have a lot of different twists and turns. I hope it kind of has the same feel as The Wife Between Us did, even though it is written by completely different people. I'm really excited to read this book.

Shatter Me has been a book I've been drawn too but never really wanted to branch out. I've actually heard some things from multiple different BookTubers. The synopsis of the book was also really interesting. I love that it was part of the Cyber Monday deals. I can't wait to read it the synopsis sounds AMAZING!

Synopsis  (from Amazon): One touch is all it takes. One touch, and Juliette Ferrars can leave a fully grown man gasping for air. One touch, and she can kill. No one knows why Juliette has such incredible power. It feels like a curse, a burden that one person alone could never bear. But The Reestablishment sees it as a gift, sees her as an opportunity. An opportunity for a deadly weapon. Juliette has never fought for herself before. But when she's reunited with the one person who ever cared about her, she finds a strength she never knew she had.

I've really heard a lot about this whole series, the cover looks amazing, and I've been debating on whether to try this story or not. I'm so glad it was on sale during the Cyber Monday special. I can't wait to see what this story holds.

Red Rising (Red Rising, #1)

This is the last of my Cyber Monday deals. I'm so flippin happy that this book was on sale. I actually had it in my hands while I was shopping at Books a Million last night and I eventually put it down because I didn't want to spend so much money on one book, which it was only like $17 so it was pretty normal price range for an adult book but I had a $20 limit last night so that alone was my challenge. So I was pretty bummed about putting the book back because I've been wanting to read it since hearing about it. It sounds very interesting to me.

Synopsis (from Amazon): Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and lush wilds spread across the planet. Darrow - and Reds like him - are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class. Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity's overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and very future civilization against the best and most brutal of Society's ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies.....even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

Books-a-Million Book Haul

So I only ended up leaving with two books last night. I had a budget, and it was SO hard to stick to it. I'm definitely one of those people who will go into the store with a 'budget' and say over and over I'm only going to spend $20 and that is it. I at least try my hardest to stick within this budget! However, if this budget is on any type of card and I also have cash in my wallet then that budget is the $20 PLUS the cash. Or if I have a $5 off of $25 coupon to use I will make sure I use it. But it is pretty much impossible for anyone to spend exactly $25 and then use that coupon and only spend exactly $20 at BAM! All of that being said I was DETERMINED to stick to a budget because money has been really tight lately so it was pretty nice to even have that money to spend at the bookstore. I went down the discount aisle first, which is always what I do because even though I don't stick to a budget I make sure whatever books I do buy is the cheapest version of that book. I honestly didn't really find much that I wanted in the discount aisle. I really only found two books that I thought I would like and one of them was actually a part of a series that I've already read but the books are all eBooks. It wasn't until I started exploring the different aisles throughout the stores that I actually started having to decide between the books. I went to the comics first because I really want to start Saga, I haven't read any comics since Walking Dead and I'm really behind on the series. I've honestly heard nothing by good things about Saga, but my bookstore was sold out of the first volume so that was knocked out of the running. I then walked down the YA aisle and that was where I really started getting in trouble. I was carrying around one book I really wanted but it would've meant it was the only book I was getting because it was an expensive book. But this girl right here put the expensive book back along with the copy of the book I already head and got the two following books. I even SAVED $5, which I get probably doesn't sound like a lot but to a person who has a serious shopping addiction was a pretty epic book shopping adventure.

I've never read anything by Rainbow Rowell but I've heard a lot about her books. I kind of wanted to buy this book before but again if I'm shopping for books I'm more likely going to go with authors I'm already comfortable with and know I'm going to enjoy this book. I will go a little nuts and get whatever sounds good when there is a sale, I'm a discount store, or I'm like 100% sure I'm going to love this book. I was kind of at the 80% sure I was going to enjoy this book but you want to know what went ahead and pushed me over the I NEED IT ledge. It was the book. The copy I was able to find at BAM! was this beautiful edition, it has the beautiful colored edge pages (which I'm obsessed with and I only have a handful of these books) and amazing illustration in the front of the book and in the back. I think it is going to be amazing! I can't wait to read it. I tried to make sure I tagged the same edition in the Books a Million link.

Synopsis (from back of the book): Cath is a Simon Snow fan. Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan, but for Cath, being a fan is her life - and she's really good at it. She and her twin sister. Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it's what got the through their mother leaving. Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fanfiction, dressing up like characters for every movie premiere. Cath's sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can't let go. She doesn't want to. Now that they're going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn't want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside her comfort zone. She's got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend; a Fiction-Writing professor who thinks fanfiction is the end of the civilized world; a hadnsome classmate who only wants to talk about words...and she can't stop worrying about her dad, who's loving and fragile and has never really been alone. For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?

This is definitely one of the books that I have been wanting since it came out. I never actually picked it up because I guess the price. I think it is more of the combination of the price along with kind of forgetting to actually buy the book. I'm one of those people who was completely OBSESSED with 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher. I loved this book, and I loved it pretty much right when it came out. It is one of the books I do actually have a couple editions because I couldn't get rid of my original copy and I really wanted the 10th anniversary edition of the story. But I was definitely on the boat before it really exploded. Anyways back to this book, it really sounds interesting to me and the fact that Asher wrote it was just a bonus to me. I can't really tag the book on Books a Million website because I actually bought the book from the discount rack so the prices would be completely different I actually got it for $5, which makes it even better and a I need it book. Plus I mean look at that cover! It's gorgeous!

Synopsis (from book cover): Sierra's family runs a Christmas tree farm in Oregon. It's bucolic setting for a girl to grow up in, except that every year, they pack up and move to California to set up their Christmas tree lot for the season. So Sierra lives two lives: her life in Oregon and her life at Christmas. And leaving one always means missing the other. Until this particular Christmas, when Sierra meets Caleb, and one life eclipses the other. By reputation, Caleb is not your perfect guy: years ago, he made an enormous mistake and has been paying for it ever since. Sierra sees beyond Caleb's past and becomes determined to help find forgiveness and, maybe, redemption. But as disapproval, misconceptions, and suspicions swirl around them, Caleb and Sierra can't help but wonder if love really is enough to overcome every obstacle.
